Excellence Group in Thermal Power and Distributed Generation – NEST

NEST is characterized by an experimental and theoretical approach of problems, always aiming at the project and optimization of equipment’s operation, systems and processes. The group’s main goals are to develop research and development projects, technological innovation, validation testing, equipment manufacture and systems related to cogeneration and distributed generation from renewable energy sources (biomass and solar). Another activity of great potential are the qualification, specialization and training courses given to the technical staff of the country’s energy sector. .

NEST has 6 laboratories: Gas turbines and biomass gasification, steam and diesel thermal systems, advanced systems of distributed generation, refrigeration and air conditioning, processes simulation of thermal systems and training laboratory for Power plants operators in simulators, all of them with advanced technology equipment. In the last two years dozens of researchers around the world have visited our laboratories and praised the level and range of research in progress. Further research and development work has been carried out with researchers from universities in the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands, Colombia, Cuba, Russia and Ukraine as visiting professors, post-doctoral students and trainees.

Several reference texts on the theme of energy conversion are the authorship of NEST researchers such as “Biofuels”, “Thermal Power Generation” and “Prevention and pollution control.” More information can be found at www.nest.unifei.edu.br.
